Exploration 8 // Shannon Applin

After watching the documentary "Fresh" I found myself being surprised by many things that I had not previously known. One thing that really caught me off guard was when the reporter asked industrial chicken farmers, Mr. and Mrs. Fox if they even knew what was in the chicken feed and their answer was no. Upon hearing this I immediately began to think about what was really in the feed and how it could adversely effect the chickens and the people who eat their meat. I also started to wonder about how many other farmers feed their animals mystery food. With that being said, I chose to research this topic further.
The New York Times published an article in 2012 claiming that industrial farmers are feeding chickens things such as caffeine, banned antibiotics and even arsenic. These antibiotics have been banned because they have the potential to breed antibiotic-resistant"superbugs" that can be harmful to humans. This is something that "Fresh" actually touched on saying that industrial farms are breeding places for creating strong diseases. This is a scary thought considering the increasing amount of industrial farms.
