Exploration 8: LaCrista Keller

1) I think that the really important idea the movie "Fresh" was trying to get us to understand would be that everything we eat today, we really have no clue just how bad it is for us. There was a quote in the beginning of the movie that rely got to me and help me understand what the film wanted us to know; "We want the food but we don't worry how we get it.". This is so beyond true, most people now go to the store or a fast food place and get the food they want without thinking about how this food will affect them, how the food was processed and how the animals that they are eating were treated. I believe that the strengths in this film were that they really made the viewer start thinking about just how bad agricultural farming truly is.

2) My research topic was Aquaponics. I wanted to look at aquaponics because I thought that it was wonderful that this method of farming is organic and has never used chemicals. Today we eat so many foods that have chemicals that could harm us in it and never even blink an eye, but with aquaponics you don't have to worry about the chemicals in the food because there aren't any. I thought that this quote helped me understand more on how aquaponics can help us, "Since one third of the 2.3 billion people in the world are known to be impoverished, such a combination of algalculture, aquaculture and aquaponics has the potential to help resolve many health problems caused by poverty." The fact that this form of farming can help peoples health is amazing and we need to start supporting it more.

3) I found it very interesting that a lot of people researched Will Allen, I picked my topic because I thought what Will Allen was doing was great and I wanted to learn more about the technique he was using. I thought that everyone did a great job with their research topics and I was very interested the entire time everyone was talking. I think that everyone understood that we need to start caring about how we get our food and exactly what is in it.

  1. I agree with your first statement. I didn't really pay attention to how I got my food until I watched this film and it's honestly so unfortunate because the sad reality is that we don't realize just how bad these foods are for us until we see a film like this.
