Exploration of your Own Design Lindsey Bridges

Part One

His father owned a store, called Wing’s Store, in Lehigh, Arizona. He told me the story of a Papago Indian, Mark Vest, and his wife. “Mark was leaving the Salt River Reservation and was supposed to be back after three days and his wife came in to talk to dad because he didn’t make it home. She went back out there to her car and was sitting there and pretty soon she came back in and talked to dad. She said I just saw Mark out here, he came up when I was getting ready to leave and put his arm up on the car. He said don’t set a place for me at the table tonight because I won’t be coming home. Dad got busy and checked around and they found out Mark Vest died of a heart attack in Phoenix, three days after he died, he told his wife he wasn’t coming home.” He told me he knows that people don’t believe in spirits but there were too many experiences that happened since he was a kid. “There’s something to it,” he said.

Early on when I started talking to my Grandpa he told me “there’s nothing really outstanding in my life on the work part of it.” A statement that I totally disagree on. Not only did Orville choose a career that many people would not have the courage to do, a mortician, he also chose to risk his life to save others as a fireman. His stories are not only insightful but a good source of learning. One day, I hope to have as many experiences to share that my grandpa does. Orville Wing is not only a man of many talents, but a humble man full of wisdom and integrity. My grandpa, Orville Wing.

Though I had other writing that I thought was better than this one, essay one was my favorite. I was most proud of it. I got to interview my grandpa and learn so much about his life that I hadn't known before. The two paragraphs I have shared above do not go together but they show what a great man my grandpa is. The first is an old ghost story he always tells, the second a portion of how greatly I respect him. I enjoyed writing this essay the most. It made him happy, when I gave him a copy of my final paper, and I was really proud of that.

Part Two

Being as big on books and reading as I am, naturally I would share a piece of writing I really liked, a poem. It is short, but conveys what I think is a powerful meaning.

Life is unpredictable,
It changes with the seasons,
Even your coldest winter,
Happens for a reason,
And though it feels eternal,
Like all you'll ever do is freeze,
I promise spring is coming,
And with it brand new leaves.

I feel like this poem is important because, we as college students, go through some of the toughest times in our lives trying to make a life for ourselves. I think that everyone needs a reminder, at some point in their life, that not all tough times last forever and you should never give up.

  1. I really like the poem that you shared in your part 2. It clearly has a lot of meaning that everyone can relate to even though it is short. It is very reassuring and puts a good note on a bad situation.

  2. By the way you write so passionately in and about essay one, clearly shows why you are so proud of the piece; it's personal and well written. I really enjoyed the ghost story, it was spine tingling and interesting. Who doesn't love a good thriller every now and then? And it sure makes you wonder. You're grandfather sounds like a wonderful man, and I'm glad that you appreciate him so much and care for him.

  3. The poem you shared reminds me a lot about what I learned from dealing with my Grandmother's death. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel. No matter how dark it may seem there is always something better at the end. The tragedy or stress may seem like torture, but that torture will help make you who you are supposed to be. It all happens for a reason, and it will all be better in the end.

  4. I think that we need little reminders like this everyday. I think it helps keep people motivated and wanting to keep going at it. I remember this thing that someone told me once, "If you think that you have it hard, someone else has it harder". I always remember that whenever I don't feel motivated to deal with any of the responsibilities i have.
