Exploration Two from LaCrista Keller

Hi, my name is LaCrista Keller. I am 19 years old and this is my sophomore year of college. Last year I went to Tiffin University and absolutely hated it, I decided to transfer to OSU Marion because it was cheaper and only 30 minutes from where I live. My fun fact was that I was the captain of my high school's color guard, for all of you that don't know what color guard is if you have ever seen a marching band ad you happened to notice people throwing flags and rifles in the air, that is exactly what I do/did. I was in color guard for four years and 8 whole seasons, I did fall guard (marching band) and then I also did winter guard (indoor guard). I absolutely loved winter guard it was everything to me for my four years of high school. Anyways, I can't wait to get going on this year of college and learn more.

I chose to research Frederick Douglass because I found it interesting that he was born into slavery but wrote better than any white person. Douglass was taught by Hugh Auld's wife Sophia his ABC's, that is very uncommon for a black man in this time period to know. He then started watching and learning from the other white boys how to read and write. Douglass tried to escape slavery twice but failed, he then succeeded with the help of Anna Murray, a woman whom he ended up falling in love with. He then became an anti-slavery lecturer and talked to groups about his experience and how it effected his live.

"Bury Me in a Free Land" by Frances W. Harper (1825-1911). I found this poem very interesting, i loved how the person writing this was not a slave but a woman who's parents were freed slaves. She explains how when she dies she wants to be buried in a free land, meaning that before she dies she wants slavery to be abolished because she won't rest easy knowing that people are still slaves. The way she worded the poem made you feel all her anger and sadness for what is happening to these people and that she wants it all to end.

One literacy even in my life would have to be when I read "Perks of Being a Wallflower". This book changed my view on life, I have always been a shy person and have always thought that being a shy person is a bad thing and that no one will like you if you aren't outgoing and loud. This book proved to me that you don't have to be outgoing to have close friends that mean the world to you, if you're happy with your life that is all that matters. The quote that spoke to me the most would have to be "We accept the love we think we deserve." this quote speaks to about everyone who has ever been in a relationship, be it romantic or friendship, that they settle in. When you know that this person isn't right for you or a good person to be around but you don't think you can't do any better so you stay with them. You have a say in who you date or are friends with, don't accept love that isn't real or unhealthy, accept the love you deserve.

  1. I think it's awesome that you were in color guard for so long! I have a friend that was a color guard in high school and she really seemed to love it too. Although it stinks that your first year at Tiffin sucked, I'm glad you said it because I was looking to go there for a little while before I decided about OSUM! I hope this is a much better year for you :)

  2. I have had a ton of friends who did color guard and I am amazed at what you do every single time. I think you should replace the cheerleaders all together haha. It takes a real dedication to be good at something like that. I could never do it thats for sure!
