Exploration Two Skyler Siles

Hi my name is Skyler SIies. I went to Olentangy Orange HIgh School and I played Football, Soccer and I also Swam. I have two younger siblings and I've been around Columbus for all my life and was born and raised as a OSU fan so I'm very excited to go to main campus soon. My plan is study medicine while joining the Air Force guard while I'm in school to have my college paid for.

I researched Frederick Douglas for my topic of interest. I chose him because he was very interesting in the fact that most slaves during this time period let alone could read or write but outsmart and intelligently better than his white counterparts. I also found it very cool that he was the first African American to be nominated for Vice President. I also did not know that Douglas toured Ireland and Britain. He is also a special case because he was born into slavery in Maryland and in Maryland it is illegal to teach slaves how to read but his owner started teaching him the alphabet when he was little.

I choose the Poem by Frances E.W. Harper, bury me in a free land. I chose this because it describes how she didn't want to die as a slave, and how people shouldn't be treated like they are and have to be raised and die as a slave. It describes how she wanted equality and fair treatment all the way up to even her peace and how she could not rest in peace knowing that slaves are being treated like the way they were.

For my Literacy Event I chose when I read the book Tuesdays with Morrie when I was a freshman in high school. It was a required reading for the summer going into freshman year but it turned out to be the best book i read all of high school. The book hit home for me because i am very family oriented and even showed me a new perspective of how you should value not only your loved ones but also the little things and people that have any kind of affect on your life because with Morrie, going through the terrible terminal illness; ALS, his student came every Tuesday to help take care of him and spend time and to write. and just reading on how he went through this really makes a person think of their loved ones and not take them for granted.

  1. The part I found most interesting about your post was that you want to be in the Air Force. My brother-in-law is in the Air Force, and he seems to really enjoy it. I wish you the best of luck in that future plan, and I'm sure you will enjoy being in the Air Force also.

  2. I also was very interested with the Air Force part of your paper, my best friend is in the Air Force and he loves it. He has always told me that being in the Air Force is a hard job to be in but it is worth every second of the pain and the yelling. I hope when you go into the Air Force you will think the same thing and end up really loving it, I hope it turns out to be everything you've ever wanted it to be.

  3. Skyler i am so excited for main campus as well! I myself am looking to major in pharmacy and that is extremely close to your pre med interests. I also enjoy football and soccer just a little bit. I am also the oldest of my siblings and i think it's crazy how much of a role model we are. Good luck in your adventure with the air force and i hope to see you at main campus!

  5. I am hoping to transfer to main campus after my first year as well and I am so excited. I noticed that you wanted to go into medicine. I hopefully am going to do that as well and hope to specialize in anesthesiology. Good luck to you and I hope to see you at Main Campus.

  6. Skyler, I also read Tuesdays with Morrie when I was a freshman in high school. For me I think this was one of the first books that I read that truly brought out a lot of emotion in me. This book really made me reflect on my life and appreciate those who are around me no matter how close I am to them because we don't know how much time we have left.
