Exploration Two: Alex Thompson

My name is Alexander Jordan Thompson, I was born and raised in Marion, Ohio all my life. I have always been in the city schools and participated in my city heavily. My fun fact was, "I'm a very good singer, and I work at Starbucks." Its not a very fun fact, but its something about myself. I have 2 brothers and 4 sisters. names from youngest to oldest are, Elise, Brianna, Grace, Braden, Noah, and Hailey. My birthday is December 4th, 1995 and I am the oldest out of my whole family. My moms name is Emily Thompson, and my dad is Dave Thompson. One interesting fact about myself is my names wasn't always Thompson. It actually use to be Stokes, to me Thompson sounds better but what are you going to do? When I was born my dad that I have now wasn't my fraternal father, which caused me to take my mothers maiden name. Eventually when she was married to Dave, I took his last name of Thompson which I have had since I was about 5 or 6. Another thing to know is my major is business financing and accounting. I chose this because I love to work with numbers and I'm a very good people person. Which I think are qualities that you must have.

Frances was born in Baltimore, the only child to free African American parents. She was raised by her aunt and uncle when her mother died. Until the age of 13 Frances attended the school for Negro Youth which was ran by her uncle. She taught fro two years in Ohio and Pennsylvania. She embarked on a career as traveling speaker and helped slaves escape the underground railroad. She was the co-founder and vice president of the American Women's Suffrage Association and a member of this group. She eventually died and was buried in Philadelphia's Eden Cemetery next to her daughter.

Frances E. W. Harper was my author of choosing. I chose her because his poem, "Bury Me in a Free Land" because it represented his quest for purity in her nation. She wanted her remains to be buried where the land was free from hate and slavery. Which would of taken place in her life. She was a selfless woman, because in the last stanza of her poem she stated how she didn't need a monument or statue to mark her resting place. Her last will was to just be buried in a land of no slaves. This inspires me because it shows that even in this time period people were willing to request their resting place, away from their home towns, or where their family plots are to an area without slavery or cruelty to humans. Tying that to modern days, one large problem people are facing is the balance between marriage equality. People are willing to alter their lives and finances just to go out of the way for a loved one. Frances understood that everyone was the same, which still to this day it hold true. We are no different by the color of our skin, or our gender, or sexual orientation. She completely understood the situation and made it her goal to not be buried where slavery will take place, and that just amazes me.

  1. Sup Alex, I just want to say that me and you both share the same first name. I read that you have a lot of siblings, or just a big family in general. I don't know what I would do if I had that many brothers and sisters.

    1. Kyle Doubikin: At least you love music, some people absolutely hate it or could feel indifferent about it. Music has been a part of my life sine I was born, I have always loved music and singing. But yeah you you know the struggle. But its an experience to work there. I think everyone should work in fast food at least once.
